TEST OF ENGLISH AS FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL |
|
|
Test Of English A Foreign Language is
a standardized test, which is taken to assess the English proficiency of individuals
whose native language is not English. Almost all educational institutes in the United States,
Canada, United Kingdom and other countries require TOEFL scores from applicants intending to
study overseas. Australians however, prefer an IELTS score. |
|
|
TOEFL could be taken either in paper-based or computer-based formats. In Pakistan, only the computer-based TOEFL (CBT) is being held currently. |
|
Computer Based TOEFL (CBT)
|
|
| The computer-based TOEFL test was
introduced in July 1998. The test is designed in such a way that it would be unlike any
other test you would have taken at school or college. First, the test has no question paper
or answer sheets, nor does it have the same set of questions for all the examinees. Furthermore,
it does not give you the option of not answering a question (unless, of course,
you run out of time at the end). All this because the TOEFL is now an entirely
Computer based test - the keyboard and mouse do the work of a pen or pencil.
The test is scored out of 300. The test scores are valid for two years!
|
|
| The TOEFL is required only to test your
English language proficiency.
A high score alone does not render into an admission offer from a great institution. However,
the test is mandatory and cannot be overlooked.
|
|
| The TOEFL is developed and administered
by the US-based "Educational Testing Service" (ETS).
For scheduling of the test, ETS has appointed authorized Regional Registration Centers (RRC) in various
countries, which act as franchisee for ETS. In Pakistan, at the moment there is no authorized RRC.
Pakistan falls under Region 6 of Asia and Pakistani students have to register themselves either
in Malaysia or India. The tests, however, are held in ETS Authorized Testing Centers in three
major cities Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. (i.e. Lahore University of Management Sciences - LUMS,
Test Center Number: 8783 is the authorized testing center in Lahore)
|
|
| Computer based TOEFL is held all-round-the-year.
Unlike other exams, students have provision choose five test dates, while filling out the registration form.
|
|
| Test fees for TOEFL may vary according to
the country in which you take the test. For Pakistani applicants, this fee is US $110,
payable at the time of registration. The fee has to be paid through a US Dollar denominated bank draft,
made out in favor of "ETS - TOEFL" payable in the U.S. Alternately, the payment can also be made
through a credit card, which has global acceptance. The credit card need not necessarily be yours -
you can get your father or a trusted relative/friend to sign for you.
